West Indies land in Thiruvananthapuram with the 2027 World Cup route already decided

Shai Hope's West Indies squad arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday morning for an eight-match limited-overs tour of India that opens with the first ODI on September 27

The tourists play three ODIs and five T20Is across three weeks, starting at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, where India's squad has also been gathering this week. Hope captains both squads, each of 15 players, on a tour Cricket West Indies has framed around the next two global tournaments.

The ODI leg carries a deadline that has already passed West Indies by. Automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup is settled on the ICC men's ODI team rankings at the end of September, and West Indies, ranked tenth, cannot reach the top eight whatever happens in the first two matches of this series.

Head coach Daren Sammy has instead presented the series as a measuring exercise. "Playing against the top team in the world presents us with a chance to fine tune and improve our performances as an ODI team which has seen quality performances across the cycle," he said when the squads were named.

A squad picked with 2027 in mind

The ODI party is Hope, Jewel Andrew, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Vitel Lawes, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford and Jayden Seales.

Sammy said the series "creates a valuable platform to assess players who are stepping into important roles for this series with a long-term target of competing in the World Cup in 2027".

That assessment is the point of the trip. West Indies will have to come through the Qualifier in February to reach a tournament being staged in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, and the squad that plays in India is the one being built for it.

Campbell back, Auguste out

John Campbell returns after the hamstring injury that cut short his involvement against New Zealand, restoring an established opener to the top order.

Ackeem Auguste misses the tour while he completes post-surgical rehabilitation, with Jewel Andrew named in his place in the ODI squad.

Shimron Hetmyer has been given extra recovery time after the Caribbean Premier League and sits out the ODIs, though he joins the group for the T20Is.

Qualification settled before a ball is bowled

The 2027 World Cup takes 14 teams. The two Full Member hosts enter directly, and the eight highest-ranked sides outside them qualify on the ODI rankings at the cut-off.

West Indies have sat outside that group for much of the cycle, and the arithmetic no longer moves in their favour: the September 30 deadline falls on the day of the second ODI in Guwahati, too soon for the ground they would need to make up.

The Qualifier route sends four teams through from a ten-team field, so the tour of India is preparation for a tournament they must now win their way into.

Pooran's call-up heads the T20I changes

The T20I squad is Hope, Andrew, Chase, Forde, Hetmyer, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Motie, Paul, Kamil Pooran, Rovman Powell, Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer.

Pooran, an uncapped opener, earns a maiden call-up on the strength of 273 runs at a strike rate of 159.64 in this year's Caribbean Premier League. Jason Holder has been rested from the T20I leg.

"We are looking to build on the momentum from our series win against Sri Lanka, with the long-term goal of developing a strong core of players ahead of the next T20 World Cup," Sammy said. "The challenge of playing against the World Champions at home will provide valuable preparation."

India waiting in Kerala

Shubman Gill leads India for the ODIs with KL Rahul as his deputy, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are both in the squad that assembled in Thiruvananthapuram this week.

After the opener, the ODIs move to Guwahati on September 30 and Chandigarh on October 3, before a T20I series that runs through Lucknow, Ranchi, Indore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru to October 17.

The first ODI begins at 2pm IST on September 27 at the Greenfield International Stadium.
