July 27: Warwickshire have been dealt a significant setback after captain Sam Hain was ruled out of the remainder of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a knee injury.
The experienced batter sustained the injury while fielding during Warwickshire's opening fixture against Northamptonshire. Medical scans conducted last week confirmed the issue, and the club has stated that Hain is expected to be sidelined until at least the middle of August.
In an official statement, Warwickshire added that no definitive timeline has been set for his return.
Hain had been appointed captain for the 50-over competition earlier this month and made an immediate impact with an impressive 80-run innings in the tournament opener despite Warwickshire suffering defeat.
His absence leaves a major gap in both leadership and batting strength as the Bears search for their first victory of the campaign.
With Hain unavailable, Rob Yates has assumed captaincy for Warwickshire's last two matches.
The team has endured a difficult start to the competition, losing all three of its opening fixtures and currently sitting at the bottom of Group A.
The squad has also been weakened by the absence of Ed Barnard, who is representing Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred.
Although Hain has featured sparingly in List A cricket over the past five seasons because of commitments in The Hundred, he remains one of England's most accomplished domestic 50-over batters.
He owns an outstanding List A batting average of 58.18 and earned two ODI appearances for England in late 2023.
Earlier this year, however, he went unsold in The Hundred draft and was not selected as a wildcard despite an impressive Vitality Blast campaign, where he scored runs at an average of 43.71 and a strike rate of 140.36.
The injury could prove equally damaging for Warwickshire's County Championship ambitions.
The Bears currently occupy third place in Division One, sitting just five points behind defending champions Nottinghamshire with six matches remaining in the season.
Hain has been Warwickshire's standout performer with the bat, accumulating 622 runs at an average of 62.20 across 14 innings, making his absence a significant concern heading into the decisive phase of the campaign.
