Smeed and Thomas Rew Power Somerset to Crushing Win, Keep Quarter-Final Dream Alive

Taunton, July 11: Will Smeed and teenage sensation Thomas Rew produced explosive knocks as Somerset thrashed Northamptonshire Steelbacks by seven wickets to keep their Vitality Blast quarter-final hopes alive.

Chasing 162, Somerset raced to 164 for 3 in just 15 overs, with Smeed and Rew smashing identical scores of 46 off 20 balls. Their blistering 74-run opening partnership from only 32 deliveries effectively took the game away from the Central and West Group leaders.

Smeed set the tone with an aggressive powerplay assault, racing to 31 inside three overs. Rew quickly joined the attack, displaying his immense potential with powerful hitting against both pace and spin.

After Smeed's dismissal, Rew continued the charge before falling for 46. Tom Kohler-Cadmore then calmly finished the chase with an unbeaten 38, ensuring Somerset secured a dominant victory with five overs remaining.

Earlier, Northamptonshire posted 161 for 8, largely thanks to a career-best 76 off 43 balls from Lewis McManus. The wicketkeeper-batter struck seven fours and four sixes but received little support from the rest of the batting order.

Daniel Sams starred with the ball for Somerset, claiming 3 for 16 from four overs. His clever use of slower deliveries and cutters restricted Northamptonshire on a used Taunton surface, while Somerset's attack consistently prevented the visitors from building momentum.

The Steelbacks, already assured of a home quarter-final, struggled after Chris Lynn departed for just one. McManus fought almost single-handedly, but the total ultimately proved well below par.

Somerset now head into their final group match against Worcestershire on Sunday in formidable form, with their hopes of reaching the Vitality Blast knockout stage still very much alive.
