Russell’s late assault falls short as Tridents edge Kingsmen in CPL opener

Barbados survive a dramatic final over to secure a five-run victory after strong contributions from Brandon King, Quinton de Kock and Sherfane Rutherford

Barbados Tridents opened their CPL 2026 campaign with a thrilling five-run victory over Jamaica Kingsmen at Sabina Park, surviving a sensational late charge from Andre Russell.

After posting 206 for 3, Tridents appeared to have the game under control when Jamaica slipped to 60 for 5 in the ninth over. But Russell's explosive 68 off 38 balls brought the Kingsmen within touching distance of an unlikely chase before Barbados held their nerve in the final over.

Needing 15 from the last six balls, Jamaica lost Russell and then Vitel Lawes, allowing Tridents to close out the contest as the Kingsmen finished on 201 for 9.

Russell sparks remarkable recovery

Jamaica's chase looked in serious trouble early on as Daniel Sams and Chris Green dismantled the top order.

Sams eventually finished with 4 for 20, while Green claimed two wickets as Kingsmen lost five wickets for just 60 runs.

Russell changed the momentum almost immediately after joining Keacy Carty. The pair blasted 72 runs from only 30 deliveries, with Russell contributing 39 from 20 balls.

Although Sams broke the partnership by removing Carty and Keemo Paul in consecutive deliveries, Russell continued his assault.

He added another 29 runs from his next 17 balls and found an excellent partner in Vitel Lawes. Their eighth-wicket partnership produced 69 runs from 38 balls, giving Jamaica genuine hope of pulling off a remarkable chase.

Russell's nine sixes also took his career tally in T20 cricket to 800, making him only the third batter to reach the landmark after Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard.

Tridents hold their nerve at the finish

Russell and Lawes remained together when the final over began, with Jamaica requiring 15 runs.

Russell struck a six from the third legal delivery, but his attempt to clear the boundary again ended with a catch inside the ring.

Lawes was then run out while attempting to regain the strike, leaving Jamaica needing six from the final delivery.

Hunain Shah failed to connect with the last-ball delivery, sealing a narrow victory for Barbados.

Russell's 68 included nine sixes and no fours, making it the first time he had hit nine sixes without a boundary four in a T20 innings.

King and Rutherford power Barbados to 206

Earlier, Barbados' batting unit had laid the foundation for a big total.

Brandon King led the way with 73 from 51 balls, while Quinton de Kock and Sherfane Rutherford provided crucial support.

CPL debutant Zachary Carter made an immediate impact, smashing 27 from 15 balls during a rapid opening partnership of 40.

King then combined with de Kock to add 72 runs from 45 deliveries. De Kock struck 42 from 25 balls before his dismissal in the 11th over.

Rutherford then accelerated alongside King, with the pair adding 93 runs from 53 balls for the third wicket.

Rutherford reached his half-century from just 28 deliveries and remained unbeaten on 50, while King was dismissed from the penultimate ball after making 73.

Their efforts pushed Barbados to 206 for 3, the highest team total of the tournament so far.

Sams makes the difference

Despite Russell's spectacular counterattack, Daniel Sams' earlier spell ultimately proved decisive.

His 4 for 20 helped put Jamaica on the back foot during the powerplay and middle overs, and his dismissal of Carty briefly appeared to have ended the chase.

Instead, Russell transformed the contest into a final-over thriller before Barbados finally secured the points.

The result gives Tridents a winning start to their CPL campaign, while Kingsmen now face an uphill battle after suffering two defeats in their opening two matches.
