Rohit and Kohli line up an India return as the West Indies one-dayers approach

Both are expected back for the three-match series that starts in Thiruvananthapuram, in what is now the only format either man plays

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to return for India's home one-day series against West Indies, which begins in Thiruvananthapuram on 27 September.

Neither selection is confirmed. The squad has not been announced, and both have been the subject of steady speculation since retiring from the other two formats.

On recent output, the arguments against picking them are thin.

What they did last time out

India's most recent one-day assignment was a three-match series in England, lost 2-1 with the decider at Lord's in July.

Rohit made 138 from 110 balls in that final match, his 34th ODI century, an innings that changed the tone of every conversation about his future within a day of being played.

Kohli finished the series with 144 runs at an average of 48, striking at better than a run a ball with two half-centuries. It was the most fluent he had looked in the format for some time.

Both innings came in a losing series, which is the caveat. But a 2-1 defeat in England is not the sort of result that forces a selection panel to tear up a batting order, and neither man was the reason for it.

Why the question keeps being asked

Rohit retired from Test cricket in 2025 and from T20 internationals the year before; Kohli's international commitments have narrowed the same way. Fifty-over cricket is all either man now plays for India.

That concentration is what turns every squad announcement into a referendum. When a player appears in one format only, and that format has fixture gaps of months, each omission looks like a decision even when it is a rest.

The board has not helped by being explicit about planning towards the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. A stated long-term plan invites the question of who is in it.

Age is the unstated part of it. Both are the wrong side of the point at which selectors start planning around a player rather than for one, and a World Cup two and a half years out is exactly the horizon that makes that awkward.

The board's position

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia pushed back firmly on the speculation after the board's performance review meeting earlier this month, pointing at Rohit's recent scoring rather than offering a general expression of confidence.

Nothing formal followed. No statement was issued about either player's status, and none was expected — there is no vacancy to fill and no announcement to make until a squad is picked.

The West Indies series is where the question gets an answer that is not a quote.

The futures of Rohit, Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the fifty-over side were all on the agenda at that meeting, which is itself an answer of sorts: three senior players discussed together are being weighed as a group rather than individually.

What the series looks like

West Indies tour India from 27 September to 17 October, playing three one-day internationals and five T20 internationals.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir stays at home to oversee it while a separate staff under VVS Laxman takes India's T20 squad to the Asian Games in Japan, the scheduling clash that forced the board to split its coaching group in two.

It is India's first extended block of home fifty-over cricket in a cycle the board has openly framed around 2027, which makes it a more consequential three matches than a bilateral series against a rebuilding West Indies side would normally be.

The squad announcement, whenever it lands, will say more about both careers than four days of speculation has.
