Nottingham, June 25: New Zealand national cricket team have been dealt a major setback ahead of the decisive third Test against England cricket team at Trent Bridge, with key players Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips ruled out due to injuries.
Fast bowler Matt Henry, who starred in New Zealand’s emphatic 253-run win at The Oval with an 11-wicket match haul, has been sidelined with a calf strain. Scans confirmed a low-grade muscle injury, and New Zealand Cricket expects him to be out for two to four weeks.
Middle-order batter Glenn Phillips has also been ruled out after suffering a side strain during the previous Test. Phillips, who scored his maiden Test century at The Oval, will undergo further medical assessment to determine the extent of the injury.
Despite the setbacks, New Zealand received a boost at the toss as captain Tom Latham elected to bat first in sweltering Nottingham conditions, with temperatures expected to touch 38°C over the next two days.
“It looks a reasonably dry surface, so hopefully we can make use of it first up,” Latham said, acknowledging that both teams have had to deal with several changes throughout the series.
New Zealand’s revised lineup sees Ben Sears replace Henry, while Mitchell Santner returns to strengthen the spin department. Blair Tickner also comes into the XI as part of the reshuffled bowling attack, with Kyle Jamieson rested due to workload management.
England, meanwhile, welcomed back captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson among four changes. Stokes admitted he would have preferred to bat first but backed his side to respond strongly.
“It’s a massive week for myself and the team,” Stokes said.
The absence of Henry and Phillips is expected to significantly affect New Zealand’s balance, with the visitors now relying heavily on their batting unit to post a strong first-innings total and compensate for the loss of two match-winners.
New Zealand are also wearing black armbands in memory of former fast bowler Bob Blair, who passed away this week at the age of 94.
