MS Dhoni to Have Final Say on CSK’s New Head Coach; Mike Hussey Emerges as Front-Runner

Chennai Super Kings are closing in on a major decision as they prepare to appoint Stephen Fleming’s successor ahead of the next Indian Premier League season, with MS Dhoni reportedly set to play a key role in finalising the new head coach.

Fleming’s long association with CSK came to an end after the franchise endured a difficult period following its fifth IPL title triumph in 2023. The former New Zealand captain, who became the longest-serving head coach in IPL history, has since taken up a new role with England’s Test setup.

With CSK entering a transition phase under captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, the franchise is expected to usher in a new coaching era.

Mike Hussey leads the race for CSK head coach role

According to a report by The Times of India journalist Dwaipayan Datta, CSK could announce Fleming’s replacement by September 20. Speaking on Chandresh Narayanan’s YouTube channel, Datta revealed that Mike Hussey is currently among the leading candidates.

Hussey has been part of the CSK setup as batting coach since 2018 and has developed a strong relationship with Dhoni and the franchise management. Although the former Australian batter has not previously held a head coach position, his extensive experience in the coaching ecosystem, including associations with England’s Test side and Welsh Fire in The Hundred, strengthens his case.

The franchise is also believed to have considered several other experienced names. However, coaches such as Duncan Fletcher, Kepler Wessels and Paddy Upton, all of whom have previously worked with Dhoni, are reportedly not in contention.

Could Eoin Morgan challenge Hussey for the job?

Former CSK spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently suggested another intriguing name for the position — former England captain Eoin Morgan.

Morgan does not have extensive professional coaching experience, but his tactical credentials remain highly regarded. His leadership played a crucial role in England’s limited-overs transformation, while he also impressed during his stint as Kolkata Knight Riders captain.

Morgan took over KKR’s captaincy from Dinesh Karthik midway through IPL 2020 and helped stabilise the team during the tournament. His understanding of T20 cricket and leadership experience could make him an interesting option for CSK.

Other names reportedly linked with the position include Brendon McCullum, Hemang Badani and Rahul Dravid, although CSK have yet to make any official announcement.

Can a new coach revive CSK’s fortunes?

CSK are looking for a fresh start after a disappointing run since their 2023 championship triumph. The franchise narrowly missed out on the IPL 2024 playoffs after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their final league match before struggling badly the following season.

The 2026 campaign also failed to produce the desired turnaround, further highlighting the need for a fresh approach.

With Fleming’s era now over, CSK's next head coach will inherit the responsibility of rebuilding the team and helping the franchise return to playoff contention.

While Mike Hussey currently appears to be the strongest candidate, the final decision could rest with Dhoni and the CSK management. The appointment, expected to be finalised by September 20, could mark the beginning of a new chapter for the five-time IPL champions.
