Sydney, July 16: Australian domestic cricket stalwart Moises Henriques has announced his retirement from New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 22-year career that made him the most-capped player in Australian domestic cricket history.
The 39-year-old, however, is not stepping away from the game entirely. Henriques is set to continue his playing career with Portugal, the country of his birth, after becoming eligible to represent them in international cricket and future World Cup qualifying tournaments.
Henriques retires as one of the most decorated players in Big Bash League history, having featured in 154 BBL matches across all 15 seasons for the Sydney Sixers. He remained loyal to the franchise throughout his career despite attracting interest from other BBL teams after not receiving a new contract for the upcoming season.
Overall, Henriques played a record 420 domestic matches in Australia, including 110 first-class, 112 List A, and 192 T20 appearances for New South Wales and the Sixers. During that time, he amassed more than 13,000 runs, claimed over 200 wickets, and helped his teams win 14 major trophies, including three BBL titles.
Having already retired from first-class cricket in 2025, Henriques played his final domestic season in white-ball cricket, leading the Sixers to the BBL final earlier this year.
"I've been fortunate to call cricket my profession for the past 22 years," Henriques said. "There was interest from other BBL teams, but it never felt right to play for anyone other than the Sixers. It feels like the right time to call stumps and begin the next chapter."
Henriques also represented Australia at international level, playing four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is, with his final appearance coming in 2021.
Tributes poured in following the announcement, with Sydney Sixers General Manager Rachael Haynes describing him as "one of the most influential figures in Sydney Sixers and BBL history." Cricket NSW Chairman John Knox praised Henriques' longevity, leadership and contribution to the game, while BBL General Manager Alistair Dobson hailed him as one of the league's most influential and decorated players.
Although his domestic career has ended, Henriques' cricket journey is set to continue on the international stage with Portugal, where he hopes to contribute to the nation's World Cup qualification ambitions.
