MiLC 2026 Set for Shortened Season as LA28 Raises the Stakes for USA Cricket

Minor League Cricket (MiLC) is set to begin its sixth season on September 17 with a shortened 62-match schedule, but despite the reduced calendar, the competition could carry greater importance than ever for American cricket.

The league phase will be played over 11 days, concluding on September 27 across eight venues in the United States. The tournament will then take a scheduled break before the playoffs and Championship Final are held at the Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston from October 21 to 25.

The unusual break has been planned to accommodate USA's home ICC Cricket World Cup League Two fixtures at Grand Prairie Stadium and the Atlanta Open. The condensed schedule also follows discussions between MiLC franchise owners and American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the commercial organization behind Major League Cricket and Minor League Cricket, over the competition's future structure.

MiLC had initially been scheduled to start on August 7 but was subsequently moved to September 17. Organizers said the revised dates would provide a more focused and operationally efficient season while allowing venue, broadcast and team arrangements to be properly coordinated.

A Bigger Pathway to the USA Team

Despite having fewer matches, MiLC's importance to American cricket continues to grow. Since its launch in 2021, the competition has provided the country's leading domestic pathway into Major League Cricket and the USA national setup.

Players such as Saiteja Mukkamalla and Sanjay Krishnamurthi have used MiLC as a platform to progress into MLC and international cricket. Established USA internationals have also regularly featured in the tournament to maintain match fitness and remain in contention for national selection.

With opportunities for high-level T20 cricket still limited in the United States, MiLC provides an important platform for players outside the regular international setup. It also gives USA head coach Pubudu Dassanayake another significant competition in which to assess domestic talent beyond the MLC season.

LA28 Could Change the Selection Race

The importance of MiLC could increase significantly as the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics approach.

Cricket's return to the Olympic program brings a unique eligibility challenge for USA. Olympic participation requires players to hold US citizenship, while ICC eligibility can be achieved through a three-year residency period.

That distinction could open the door for a new group of American-born or US-citizen players to push for Olympic selection. Only six members of USA's 15-player squad at this year's T20 World Cup were American citizens, highlighting how different the selection pool for LA28 could become.

As a result, the next two MiLC seasons could serve as auditions not only for MLC contracts and USA international opportunities, but also for a place in the country's historic Olympic squad.

The same dynamic could emerge as early as next year's Pan American Games, where citizenship requirements could again create opportunities for a different group of American players.

Eight Venues and a New Ownership Identity

The 62 matches will be played across eight venues, including Church Street Park in Morrisville and Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. The newly opened Knight Riders Cricket Ground in California will also host MiLC matches, adding another quality facility to the domestic cricket network.

MiLC has played an important role in expanding the use of turf wickets and improving cricket infrastructure across the United States since its launch.

There will also be a change to the league's franchise landscape. Kings XI Dallas will operate as All Stars Dallas following a change in ownership, giving the Dallas market a new identity heading into the 2026 season.

The sixth edition of MiLC will therefore be considerably different from the expansive tournament that began in 2021. The schedule is shorter, the playing window is tighter and discussions about the competition's long-term commercial structure continue.

Yet with LA28 approaching, the reduced number of matches may make each game even more significant for players hoping to establish themselves in the next generation of USA cricket.
