MI London face huge NRR hurdle in bid to knock Sunrisers Leeds out of Hundred

Manchester Super Giants have secured an Eliminator place, while Sunrisers Leeds and MI London remain in contention for the final playoff spot

The race for the final Eliminator place in the men's Hundred has gone down to the wire, with MI London needing a huge victory over Birmingham Phoenix to displace Sunrisers Leeds.

Trent Rockets have already secured their place in the final, while Manchester Super Giants moved into second after dismantling Sunrisers Leeds on Tuesday. The result left Sunrisers vulnerable despite having accumulated the same number of points as Super Giants.

Both Sunrisers Leeds and Manchester Super Giants have 20 points, but Super Giants now sit above them on net run rate.

MI London and Welsh Fire are next on 16 points, although Fire's significantly inferior NRR means they can no longer challenge for the playoff position.

What MI London need

MI London currently have a net run rate of 0.262, compared with 0.602 for Sunrisers Leeds.

That leaves the London-based side with very little margin for error in their final league match against Birmingham Phoenix.

If MI London bat first, they need to win by at least 59 runs to move above Sunrisers on NRR.

If they bowl first, the equation is similarly demanding: they must chase down Phoenix's total with at least 35 balls remaining.

The exact requirement could shift slightly depending on Phoenix's final score. A particularly low target could make the chase easier, while a boundary off a tied score could also influence the calculation.

Sunrisers can only wait

Sunrisers Leeds have already completed their league campaign, meaning their playoff fate is now out of their hands.

Their NRR suffered a major blow against Manchester Super Giants, falling from 1.094 to 0.602 after Super Giants chased down 128 with 33 balls still available.

Tim Seifert's unbeaten 80 from 40 balls powered that chase and lifted Manchester above Sunrisers in the table.

If MI London fail to collect the required four points against Phoenix, Sunrisers Leeds will retain third place and advance to the Eliminator.

Welsh Fire out of contention

Welsh Fire's playoff hopes have effectively ended despite still having one league game remaining.

They are also on 16 points, but their net run rate of -1.001 leaves them far too far behind Sunrisers Leeds. Even a victory over London Spirit would not give them enough opportunity to make up the enormous NRR deficit.

That means the final playoff battle is effectively between Sunrisers Leeds and MI London.

For MI London, Wednesday night's match against Birmingham Phoenix is therefore simple in principle but extremely difficult in practice: win big, or their Hundred campaign is over.
