Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades will remain part of the Big Bash League for at least one more season, easing immediate concerns over the future of Melbourne’s two franchises amid ongoing privatisation discussions.
The uncertainty began after Cricket Victoria announced the merger of the two club operations earlier this month, triggering widespread debate and frustration across Australian cricket.
Although state chairs voted “in principle” on Monday in favor of a hybrid privatisation model—allowing each state to decide whether to sell stakes in their BBL clubs—the process remains far from complete. A major hurdle is securing approval from the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA), particularly regarding player payment structures and revenue sharing.
Cricket Victoria has reportedly applied to trademark potential new team names for the Stars, including Rangers, Blazers, and Magic. However, due to delays in the privatisation timeline, plans for an immediate rebrand have been shelved.
In a joint statement, both clubs confirmed that no rebranding will occur ahead of the 2026-27 season.
“Due to the extended timeline for a decision on BBL privatisation, we have decided not to proceed with a rebranded team for the upcoming season,” the statement said.
As a result, the Stars will continue under their current identity for both the BBL and WBBL, while the Renegades will operate under temporary management led by former Stars general manager Max Abbott, with financial backing from Cricket Victoria.
While some insiders remain optimistic that privatisation terms—including negotiations with the ACA—could be finalized within the next month, others remain skeptical about such a rapid resolution.
A key issue remains player compensation. Domestic players have voiced frustration over overseas signings receiving significantly larger guaranteed contracts, leading to calls for an increased revenue share under the Memorandum of Understanding—from 27.5% to 30%.
The ACA is also expected to meet with players from both Melbourne franchises to address concerns following the merger announcement and provide clarity ahead of the new season.
For now, fans can expect both Melbourne clubs to take the field as usual in the 2026-27 Big Bash season, with long-term structural changes still under discussion.
