Jacks's maiden five-for sinks Sri Lanka as England win the first ODI by 89 runs

Will Jacks followed an unbeaten 46 with career-best figures of 5-22 as England opened their one-day series against Sri Lanka with an 89-run win at Chester-le-Street

England won the toss, chose to bat and were bowled out for 265 in 48.1 overs, a total that looked a little short of par on a slow surface at the Riverside Ground.

It proved more than enough. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 176 in 37 overs, their middle order undone by Jacks's off-spin, and England lead the three-match series 1-0.

Jacks was named player of the match for a performance that shaped both innings, rescuing England's batting at the back end before returning his first five-wicket haul in one-day internationals.

Brook sets the tone before England stall

Harry Brook top-scored with 67 from 49 balls, the England captain taking on the bowling from the outset rather than waiting for the surface to ease.

Joe Root made 44 before he was bowled by the debutant Sachindu Colombage, who also removed Jos Buttler to leave England without either of the batters best placed to build an innings.

Brook's dismissal checked the scoring, and England lost wickets at regular enough intervals through the back half to be bowled out with 11 balls of their allocation unused.

Jacks holds the lower order together

Jacks came in with the innings in need of repair and finished 46 not out from 47 balls, the one settled hand at the end of the England innings.

He took four consecutive fours off Dushmantha Chameera in a single over, the passage that lifted England from a below-par score to a defendable one.

Colombage ended with 3-44 on debut and Asitha Fernando took 3-53, the pair accounting for six of the ten England wickets between them.

Seven overs that settled it

Josh Tongue made the early breakthrough, having Pathum Nissanka caught behind for 27, but Sri Lanka were still within reach of the target when Jacks was brought into the attack.

Kusal Mendis had made 42 from 60 balls when he was trapped lbw attempting a sweep, and Charith Asalanka fell lbw to the same bowler soon after, the two dismissals that took the chase apart.

Jacks finished with 5-22 from seven overs. Jamie Overton took two wickets, with Gus Atkinson, Tongue and Rehan Ahmed one apiece.

Wellalage offers the last resistance

Dunith Wellalage made 45 down the order, the only Sri Lanka innings after Mendis to carry any momentum, and for a time he kept the scoreboard moving quickly enough to matter.

Once he was gone the innings folded, Sri Lanka bowled out with 13 overs of their allocation unused and the required rate long since irrelevant.

Mendis pointed to his middle order afterwards, saying the side had needed to find boundaries earlier in the chase.

A mark that has stood since 1984

Jacks's figures are the second-best returned by an England spinner in a one-day international, behind only Vic Marks, who took 5-20 against New Zealand at Wellington in 1984.

Brook was firm about where the off-spinner now sits in the side, saying Jacks "is not a part-timer; he is a very good off-spinner" and that he can "spin the ball big and contain batters when we need to".

Jacks was more measured about a role that has grown around him, saying he goes "into each game with an open mind and see what it is when I walk out there".

The second one-day international is at Headingley on Thursday, with the series ending at The Oval on Sunday.
