IPL confirms Goa as the 2027 auction venue with December 15 and 16 the likely dates

Goa has been confirmed as the host of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, with December 15 and 16 named as the likely dates

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has settled the question that was left open when the league said this month that its next auction would return to India. The venue is Goa, and the sale is pencilled in for the middle of December.

"We have finalised Goa. The likely dates are December 15 to 16," Dhumal told PTI. The auction is expected to run for a single day, as mini-auctions do, rather than across the two days a mega auction needs.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the destination separately on Wednesday. "This year, after hosting the IPL auction in three foreign locations, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi last year, we are going to host it in Goa in the month of December," he said.

Goa's first auction since 2009

The state has staged one of these before, and it was a very different occasion. The auction for the league's second season was held in Goa on February 6, 2009, built around filling overseas slots rather than rebuilding squads.

Each franchise carried a maximum purse of US$2 million that day. Fifty players went under the hammer and only 17 were sold.

The costliest were Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen, who fetched US$1.55 million each — Flintoff to Chennai Super Kings, Pietersen to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The last mini-auction of the cycle

December's sale is the final mini-auction of the 2023-27 cycle. A mega auction, at which franchises rebuild from a much shorter retention list, is due after the 2027 season.

That shapes how the ten teams will approach it. Squads assembled at the 2025 mega auction stay largely intact, and the bidding tends to be narrow and tactical — a death bowler here, a top-order overseas batter there — rather than wholesale reconstruction.

It also ends a three-year run of auctions held away from India, in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.

Retentions and season dates still to come

The IPL has not yet announced the retention deadline, the point at which franchises submit their lists of retained and released players. It usually falls towards the end of November, which would leave franchises a fortnight or so between publishing their lists and walking into the room.

Those lists effectively set the shape of the auction. The pool of available players, and the size of each purse, is decided by who the ten teams let go rather than by anything that happens on the day.

Nor are the season dates settled. The league earlier flagged a March 14 to May 30 window for 2027, though Saikia has since indicated the season would begin towards the end of March. Official dates have not been released.

Squads already in motion

Franchises have not waited for December to start reshaping. Rishabh Pant has been traded back to Delhi Capitals, the club where he spent nine seasons and captained in 43 matches, with Kuldeep Yadav moving to Lucknow Super Giants in the other direction.

Pant, bought for INR 27 crore at the 2025 mega auction to become the most expensive signing in IPL history, goes to Delhi at a reduced fee of INR 15 crore. Kuldeep continues on his existing INR 13.50 crore.

The arithmetic matters in a mini-auction, where purse depth decides how many gaps a side can realistically fill. Lucknow add INR 13.75 crore to theirs; Delhi lose INR 1.25 crore from theirs.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru will arrive in Goa as defending champions, having won the title in 2025 and retained it in 2026.

The IPL has still to confirm the exact date, the venue within Goa and the retention deadline that will precede the auction.
