India sit fifth in the World Test Championship with seven Tests of the cycle left

India hold fifth place in the World Test Championship standings with seven matches of the 2025-27 cycle still to play

The table was refreshed on Saturday, when England completed a 3-0 win over Pakistan at Edgbaston and closed out the latest block of championship cricket. India were not involved, having been idle in the format since their tour of Sri Lanka in August, but the sweep firmed up the picture at both ends of a table they have been trying to climb.

Shubman Gill's side are fifth on 51.52 per cent, with 68 points from 11 Tests — five won, four lost and two drawn.

Australia remain clear at the top on 80.00 per cent, and only the top two sides in the final table will meet in the championship decider in 2027.

Eleven Tests and a mixed return

India opened the cycle with five Tests in England in the middle of last year, then played home series of two matches each against West Indies and South Africa.

Their most recent championship assignment was a two-Test tour of Sri Lanka in August. Across those 11 matches they have taken 68 of a possible 132 points.

Only Australia, with 10 matches, have played a comparable number among the sides above India. The other three carry much smaller samples, and percentages built on four or six Tests move further with every result.

Australia set the pace

Australia have 96 points from 10 Tests, eight of them won, for a championship-leading 80.00 per cent.

South Africa are second on 75.00 per cent from only four matches, and New Zealand third on 72.22 from six.

Bangladesh, fourth on 55.56 per cent from six Tests, are the only other side above India. Their remaining programme is two Tests each against West Indies, England and South Africa.

England's sweep leaves them sixth

England's victory at Edgbaston completed a clean sweep of the three-match series but did not lift them off sixth place, still behind India.

Pakistan, beaten in all three Tests, remain ninth and last of the nine competing sides.

England have three Tests in South Africa and two in Bangladesh left in the cycle. Pakistan's remaining programme is two against Sri Lanka and two against New Zealand.

Seven Tests to settle India's cycle

India's next championship cricket is a two-Test tour of New Zealand later this year, against the side currently third in the table.

That is followed by five Tests at home against Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early in 2027, the longest series of the cycle for either side and the one most likely to decide where India finish.

A maximum of 84 points is still available to them across those seven matches, enough for the percentage to move a long way in either direction.

Both of those opponents currently sit above India in the table, New Zealand third and Australia first.

Percentages still to settle

South Africa's 75.00 per cent has been built on four Tests, and they face 10 more — three against Australia, two against Bangladesh, three against England and two against Sri Lanka.

Australia have 12 Tests to come, beginning with three in South Africa next month, then four at home against New Zealand and five in India.

At the other end, West Indies are eighth on 20.83 per cent with only two Tests left, against Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are seventh on 33.33.

For India, a place in the 2027 final now rests on a short tour of New Zealand and a home series against the team leading the table.
