The ICC has approved a new trial rule that will allow Test matches to switch from a red ball to a pink ball during bad-light conditions in an effort to minimise interruptions and lost playing time.
The decision was finalised during the ICC Board meeting in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Under the new trial, teams can continue play under floodlights with a pink ball, but only if both sides agree to the change.
Pink balls have so far been reserved exclusively for day-night Tests, mainly played in Australia. The new initiative is aimed at reducing stoppages caused when umpires deem the red ball difficult to see in fading light.
Alongside the ball-change trial, the ICC also announced plans to research improved lighting solutions for venues and match officials in collaboration with the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
Several other playing-condition changes were also approved.
Head coaches and designated support staff will now be allowed to step onto the field during scheduled drinks breaks to communicate directly with players — a system already widely used in franchise cricket leagues like the IPL.
In T20 internationals, the innings interval will now officially be capped at 15 minutes, with batting sides expected to be ready immediately after the break.
The ICC has also made permanent the use of guideline markings to help umpires judge leg-side wides when batters move around the crease. The rule had been tested during earlier trials in 2025.
Additionally, match officials dealing with suspect bowling actions will now be able to access Hawk-Eye technology for better assessment and decision-making.
The proposed red-to-pink ball switch could become one of the most significant Test-cricket innovations in recent years if the trial proves successful.
