Holder, Russell Hold Their Nerve as LA Knight Riders Edge Unicorns in MLC Thriller

Dallas, July 11: Jason Holder and Andre Russell delivered decisive all-round performances as Los Angeles Knight Riders secured a thrilling 11-run victory over San Francisco Unicorns in a high-scoring Major League Cricket encounter.

Defending 184 for 7, LAKR made a sensational start with the ball, reducing the Unicorns to 42 for 4 inside five overs. Holder and Russell caused the early damage before Hassan Khan and Matthew Short revived the chase with scores of 45 and 43 respectively.

Hammad Azam then launched a stunning late assault, smashing 40 from just 19 balls to bring the Unicorns within touching distance of victory. After consecutive boundaries off Holder in the 19th over, the equation came down to 18 runs from 10 deliveries with two wickets remaining.

Holder responded under pressure by dismissing Hammad with the final ball of the over. Russell then claimed the last wicket in the final over as the Unicorns were bowled out for 173, five balls short of completing their innings.

Holder finished with 4 for 40 and was named Player of the Match, while Russell claimed 3 for 42 after earlier producing an explosive 40 from only 18 balls with the bat.

Earlier, Colin Munro struck 52 and Matthew Tromp narrowly missed a half-century with 49 as LAKR built a strong platform. Russell's late hitting pushed the total to 184, although Haris Rauf's 3 for 25 and Xavier Bartlett's 2 for 24 prevented the Knight Riders from crossing 200.

The victory marked LAKR's second consecutive win and strengthened their position in the MLC 2026 playoff race. LAKR, San Francisco Unicorns and MI New York are now level on 10 points after nine matches, with the Unicorns leading the trio on net run rate.
