Oakland, July 16: Washington Freedom completed the highest successful run chase in men's T20 history, hunting down a mammoth target of 267 to defeat MI New York by six wickets in a breathtaking MLC 2026 Eliminator.
The contest rewrote the record books as three batters scored centuries in the same men's T20 match for the first time, while a staggering 51 sixes were struck during an unforgettable run-fest.
After being asked to bat, MI New York piled up 266 for 9, driven by a sensational 106 off just 31 balls from Nicholas Pooran, the fastest century in Major League Cricket history. Quinton de Kock chipped in with 51 before Kieron Pollard hammered 64 from only 25 deliveries, crossing the milestone of 1,000 career T20 sixes during his explosive knock.
At one stage, MI New York looked set to breach the 300-run mark, but Rachin Ravindra produced a remarkable spell to change the momentum. Bowling the death overs, the New Zealand all-rounder claimed 4 for 29, restricting the late scoring surge and ensuring Freedom's chase remained within reach.
Washington Freedom's reply began disastrously as Shakib Al Hasan struck twice with the new ball, reducing them to 10 for 2. From there, Andries Gous and captain Steven Smith produced one of the greatest partnerships in T20 history.
The pair added a stunning 241 runs for the third wicket in just 89 balls, equalling the second-highest partnership for any wicket in men's T20 cricket. Gous dominated the attack with a breathtaking 132 off 51 deliveries, becoming the first USA batter to score a century in Major League Cricket, while Smith remained unbeaten on 110, anchoring the chase with equal authority.
Both batters reached their centuries in only 40 balls, and Freedom's assault gathered unstoppable momentum through the middle overs. Gous unleashed a brutal attack that included four consecutive sixes in a single over, while MI New York's fielders failed to capitalize on several catching opportunities that proved costly.
Although Gous and Nikhil Chaudhary departed late in the innings, the outcome was never seriously in doubt. Washington Freedom reached 270 for 4 with eight balls to spare, completing the biggest successful chase in T20 history and knocking MI New York out of the tournament.
The victory sends Washington Freedom into Eliminator 2, where they will face the San Francisco Unicorns for a place in the MLC 2026 final against the LA Knight Riders.
