Bristol, July 8: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has revealed that wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been given complete clarity over his omission from the playing XI and the upcoming T20I squad for Zimbabwe, insisting team selection is based purely on form and the combination best suited to deliver results.
Samson, who was named Player of the Tournament during India's successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year, has endured a difficult run since then. Scores of 5, 0 and 1 during the Ireland and England tours saw him lose his place to 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, while he was also left out of India's squad for the Zimbabwe series later this month.
Addressing the decision, Gambhir said he had personally spoken to Samson and explained the reasoning behind the move.
"The clarity Sanju needed has already been given to him. Those discussions remain between the head coach and the player," Gambhir said. "What he achieved during the World Cup was phenomenal, but international cricket is about current form and selecting the combination that gives the team the best chance to win."
Despite India's poor run of results following their T20 World Cup triumph, Gambhir urged patience, pointing out that the team is undergoing a significant transition.
India have lost all four completed T20Is since defending their World Cup title, including a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland and currently trail England 2-0. However, Gambhir noted that the current side differs considerably from the championship-winning team, with several senior players absent.
"We're in the middle of a reset. There's a new captain, new opening combinations, and players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are unavailable. Youngsters such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Prince Yadav and Harshit Rana are still finding their feet at international level. These transitions take time," he explained.
The India coach also stressed the need for greater game awareness, saying players must adapt better to overseas conditions instead of relying solely on an aggressive approach.
"Reading the conditions and understanding match situations are just as important as intent. Small factors like boundary dimensions or the wind can change a T20 game. Our experienced middle-order batters need to recognise those moments and build the innings when required, something we didn't execute well in the last match," Gambhir added.
With India trailing in the series, the fourth T20I presents an opportunity for the visitors to keep the contest alive while continuing their rebuilding process under Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer.
