Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has called for patience and positivity as the franchise navigates a transition phase with a young squad in IPL 2026.
Following a disappointing opening defeat, Gaikwad emphasised the importance of allowing inexperienced players the freedom to learn and grow under pressure rather than burdening them with expectations. With several new faces in the XI, including high-profile debutant Kartik Sharma, CSK are entering a new era after the absence of stalwarts like MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina.
Gaikwad made it clear that he is not trying to impose himself as captain but instead wants to create a supportive environment. “You have to allow them to make mistakes… and make sure they are in a good headspace,” he said, underlining the need for youngsters to express themselves freely.
He also highlighted the unique pressures of the IPL, where scrutiny comes from all directions — media, fans, and team expectations. According to him, adapting to that environment takes time, and early setbacks should not lead to self-doubt.
Despite the poor start, Gaikwad urged his players to maintain a positive batting mindset. He believes fearlessness is key, especially in a format where hesitation can be costly. The focus, he stressed, should be on trusting individual strengths and embracing the opportunity.
Looking ahead to their first home game in Chennai, Gaikwad acknowledged the evolving nature of the Chepauk pitch, which has recently become more batting-friendly. However, he expressed confidence that CSK’s squad has the flexibility to adapt to varying conditions.
For CSK, the challenge is clear: rebuild without losing identity. And under Gaikwad’s leadership, that rebuild will be rooted in trust, patience, and giving youth the freedom to fail—and succeed.
