England look to seal the ODI series at Headingley after Jacks's career-best five-for

England need one win at Headingley on Thursday to take the one-day series against Sri Lanka, with Will Jacks at the centre of their plans six weeks after emergency surgery

The second of three one-day internationals begins at 12.30pm in Leeds, with England 1-0 up after an 89-run win at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday. A second victory would settle the series with a match still to play.

It would also close out a bleak tour for the visitors, who were beaten 3-0 in the Twenty20 series that preceded it and have yet to win a match in England on this trip.

The opener was shaped by Will Jacks, whose unbeaten 46 rescued a wobbling innings and whose 5-22 then took the chase apart — reported as the second-best figures by an England spinner in a one-day international.

A career-best five-for at Chester-le-Street

England were 181 for 3 before sliding to 211 for 7, a collapse that threatened to leave them well short on a surface giving the batters little.

Jacks saw the innings out with 46 not out to lift the total to 265. Harry Brook had earlier made 67, the only half-century of the match.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 176 in reply, Jacks taking five wickets for 22 runs from seven overs of off-spin for the best figures of his 50-over career.

From a hospital bed in Edinburgh

Jacks was in Edinburgh for his mother's 60th birthday when what he took for a stomach bug turned out to be appendicitis, and he had emergency surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

"It was, obviously, completely random and quite scary. I was lucky to be looked after really well by the NHS," Jacks said of the episode, which carried an initial four-week recovery period.

He came back early, captaining an England Lions warm-up match on 11 September before playing all three Twenty20 internationals and then the first one-day international.

Bowling was the last part of the rehabilitation to return. "If I am honest, I only bowled five days before the first T20 because I was building up my strength and trying to get some fitness back," he said.

A changed role under Brook

An opening batter and occasional off-spinner for most of his white-ball career, Jacks has been moved down the order as a finisher and handed far more of the ball since Brook took charge.

He was named vice-captain for this tour, and Brook has said the Headingley crowd will see the benefit of that shift in role.

"My role in the team is something I am comfortable with. I know how I am viewed by my captain and the other players," Jacks said.

Sri Lanka running out of room

Kusal Mendis and his side must win in Leeds to take the series to The Oval with anything on it, and their batting has been the problem throughout.

Sri Lanka have not passed 176 in any of the four completed matches of the tour, having been held to 135, 145 for 9 and 124 in the Twenty20 internationals.

The squad carries genuine spin depth in Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage, but the top order around Pathum Nissanka has repeatedly handed England a total to defend.

England's options in Leeds

Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue lead the seam attack, with Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed the specialist spin options alongside Jacks.

Joe Root and Jos Buttler give the order its experience either side of Brook, with Ben Duckett and Tom Banton also available in a squad that has changed little since the Twenty20 leg.

The third one-day international is at The Oval on Sunday.
