Cricket Australia approves Big Bash privatisation and puts the Melbourne Renegades up for sale

Cricket Australia has opened the Big Bash Leagues to private ownership and put the Melbourne Renegades up for sale in full

The governing body's board approved a self-determination model that leaves each state association to decide if and when it sells a stake in its Big Bash club, and launched a sales process for a 100 per cent stake in the Renegades at the same time.

New owners are targeted for the 2027-28 Big Bash League and Women's Big Bash League seasons. The competitions that begin this Australian summer are unaffected, with the Renegades run under Cricket Australia caretaker management until a buyer is in place.

The decision matters well beyond Australia. Indian groups that own Indian Premier League franchises have bought into leagues in South Africa, the Caribbean and the United States, and the Big Bash is one of the few major T20 competitions in which they hold no stake.

What the board signed off

Cricket Australia said its board had agreed to take a landmark step towards bringing private investment into the Big Bash Leagues, beginning with the Renegades sales process. The framework behind the decision was agreed in principle in mid-June.

Chair Mike Baird framed it as a structural move rather than a windfall. "By opening the door to private investment in the Big Bash Leagues, Cricket Australia is taking a deliberate step to strengthen and secure the long-term future of the game," he said.

The model stops well short of handing the leagues over. Cricket Australia keeps control of international scheduling, player availability, salary caps and media rights, and can veto an investor or set a reserve price on any sale.

Renegades first to market

The Renegades are the only club formally for sale. The US merchant bank Raine Group has been engaged to approach potential investors, and Cricket Australia expects the process to be completed by Christmas.

A buyer will not get a free hand with the brand. Changes to a club's name, colours or branding need approval from Cricket Australia in the Renegades' case, and from the state association everywhere else.

Which states are in and which are not

Cricket Victoria, Cricket Tasmania and Western Australia are the associations pushing hardest, and the Melbourne Stars, Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers are the clubs most often named as candidates to follow the Renegades.

Cricket New South Wales, which owns the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder, has held back, as have the associations behind the Brisbane Heat and the Adelaide Strikers. New South Wales has argued that selling equity delivers only a short-term boost and that the game's finances need longer-term structural repair.

Under self-determination none of them is bound by the Renegades sale, and each remains free to come to market later.

Why IPL owners are watching

Groups associated with IPL teams already hold franchises in South Africa's SA20 and in Major League Cricket in the United States, and Indian reporting this week has put the Big Bash squarely on their radar.

Two obstacles temper the interest. Indian men's cricketers contracted to the national system remain barred from overseas franchise leagues, so an Indian owner could not put Indian stars into an Australian side.

The second is the calendar. The Big Bash occupies a December-January window that already overlaps SA20 and the UAE's ILT20, leaving multi-team owners bidding against themselves for players.

Players' share still unresolved

The approval landed with the players' cut unsettled. The Australian Cricketers' Association wants 27.5 per cent of the proceeds of any stake sale, while Cricket Australia has proposed 27.5 per cent of the interest earned on proceeds that are reinvested.

"A new MoU needs to be negotiated between ACA and CA, and currently we are a long way apart on a possible new deal," said the association's chief executive, Paul Marsh.

Cricket Australia wants the Renegades sale completed by Christmas, with the new owner in charge in time for the 2027-28 season.
