Blake and Fisher drag Surrey to a one-wicket win over Yorkshire at the Oval

A reserve wicketkeeper batting at number four and a seamer facing his former county carried Surrey home in a Championship match in which no innings reached 190

Surrey beat Yorkshire by one wicket at the Kennington Oval, chasing 185 in a game where 23 wickets had fallen in a single day and every innings on either side was over inside 76 overs.

They were 115 for 7 and losing when Josh Blake and Matt Fisher came together. The pair added 55 in 23 overs, and the last two wickets found the remaining 15.

It was only Surrey's second Championship win of the season, and it lifted them above Yorkshire in a Division One relegation fight that now involves both.

A match no batter controlled

Surrey chose to bowl, dismissed Yorkshire for 185 in 75.4 overs, and were then themselves shot out for 83 in 30 overs. Yorkshire's second innings lasted 28.5 overs and produced 82, all of it to seam.

Fisher took 6 for 25 in that second innings, a career best and against the county he grew up at. Tom Lawes took four for 36 across the same collapse, and the two of them removed Yorkshire inside a session.

Yorkshire's bowlers had been no less effective on the same surface. Jack White took three for 14 and Ben Coad three for 22 as Surrey's first innings lasted half an hour beyond lunch.

Twenty wickets fell across the two innings in fewer than 59 overs of cricket, which left a target of 185 looking substantial on a pitch where nobody had passed 50.

Blake's four and a half hours

Blake finished 43 not out from 183 balls, having come in at number four in only his seventh first-class match. The 27-year-old is Surrey's reserve wicketkeeper and was batting well out of his usual position.

He was at the crease for four and a half hours. On a pitch that had produced 23 wickets in a day, occupying it for that long was the single most valuable thing anyone did in the match.

Fisher's 33 from 59 balls completed an all-round game against Yorkshire, and included a cover drive off Jack White that was the best shot played by either side. He was eventually caught at third slip driving at George Hill, who finished with four for 52 from 23 overs.

The finish

Auqib Nabi came in and swung Coad for six, then skied the next ball to mid-on with two runs still needed, which left Surrey nine down and Blake with the last man for company.

Blake and last man Dan Worrall then failed to score from ten deliveries, including a maiden from Hill bowled at a batter who had not scored freely all innings.

Worrall ended it by slicing Coad over square cover for four.

Where it leaves both counties

Surrey took 19 points from the match and Yorkshire three. The two sides had gone into the round seventh and eighth in Division One and both are trying to avoid relegation.

Yorkshire's defeat pulls them further into that fight. Surrey, who had won once all season before this, have given themselves a margin they did not have on Wednesday morning.

Hampshire, beaten by an innings at home in the same round, remain bottom of the division and well adrift of both of them.
