BCCI opens its 95th AGM in Mumbai with Ajit Agarkar's future as chief selector unsettled

India's board opened its 95th annual general meeting in Mumbai on Friday with the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar among the questions waiting on the table

The Board of Control for Cricket in India convened its general body at the board's Mumbai headquarters, the meeting having been called for 11:30 AM in a notice issued by the office of secretary Devajit Saikia.

President Mithun Manhas, vice-president Rajeev Shukla and Saikia were among those who arrived at the venue, as was former president Sourav Ganguly, along with Saurabh Tiwari and Abhishek Dalmiya.

The agenda runs from audited accounts to the composition of the IPL Governing Council, but the item drawing the widest attention is the one that decides who picks India's teams.

Agarkar's term runs out next month

Agarkar took charge of the senior men's selection committee on 4 July 2023, and his tenure expires in early October, leaving the board to decide between an extension and a fresh appointment.

He was still in the chair two days before the meeting, presiding over the selection meeting on 16 September that named India's white-ball squads for the home series against West Indies.

No formal announcement on the position had been made as the general body sat down. Reports ahead of the meeting placed former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha in contention, both of them internationals who played across formats.

Whoever takes the role inherits an immediate workload, with India and India A squads for the New Zealand tour to be settled once the West Indies series is under way.

Two seats on the IPL Governing Council

The general body was set to elect and induct two of its representatives to the IPL Governing Council, the panel that oversees the league's operations.

Current chairman Arun Dhumal and Khairul Jamal Majumdar filed nominations for the two places and were expected to be returned unopposed.

A third seat is a separate matter. The agenda also carries the induction of one representative of the Indian Cricketers' Association, the body that speaks for the country's former players, onto the same council.

India's seat at the ICC

The nomination of the board's representative to the International Cricket Council is also before the meeting, a post that carries India's voice into the game's governing body.

The seat matters beyond protocol. India's representative sits among the members who set the international calendar, the distribution of the game's revenues and the direction of its global events.

Saikia, who has held the secretary's office through the current term, is expected to continue in the role, with the appointment formally confirmed among the administrative decisions taken in Mumbai.

Accounts, auditors and a new associate member

The meeting opened with the confirmation of the minutes of the 94th annual general meeting, held on 28 September 2025.

Members were then to take up the audited accounts for the financial year 2025-26 and adopt the annual budget for 2026-27, along with the appointment of the board's auditor.

A place on the map is also at stake. The agenda proposes the grant of associate membership to the Cricket Association of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, extending the board's formal membership into the archipelago.

Committees and appointments

Appointments to the Junior Cricket Committee were listed for confirmation, applications for those places having closed on 5 September.

Beyond that sit the offices that police the board's own conduct, with the meeting due to settle the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer positions.

Membership of the standing committees, the cricket committees and the umpires committee completes an agenda that reaches into most corners of how Indian cricket is run.

The decisions taken in Mumbai will shape the panel that picks India's squads through a home summer that begins against West Indies and continues with New Zealand.
