BCCI brings the IPL 2027 mini-auction back to India after three years overseas

The IPL Governing Council has settled on India as the venue for the 2027 player auction, ending three years of overseas bidding, with the city and the date still to be fixed

The Indian Premier League will hold its next player auction on home soil for the first time since 2023, after the league's Governing Council formalised the decision at a meeting on 15 September. The three editions before it were staged abroad, in Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.

Neither a city nor a firm date has been announced. Reports this week placed the auction in the second week of December, which would keep it inside the window the league normally uses, but the board has confirmed neither detail.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, speaking to PTI, said the intention had been there for years and that a smaller event improved the odds of finding a room for it. "Every year we try for this to happen in India, but we don't get the venue given the heavy marriage season. So, we definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction and hopefully we will get the venue," he said.

Back on home soil after three years

Kochi staged the last auction held in India, before the 2023 season. The event then moved to Dubai for 2024, Jeddah for 2025 and Abu Dhabi for 2026.

Franchises had put the practical difficulty of the arrangement to the Governing Council, having to move a full delegation of scouts, analysts and owners overseas for what is a comparatively short event.

A domestic auction removes that travel and the cost attached to it, and the council accepted that the expense was harder to justify for a mini-auction than for a mega auction.

A five-star hotel in wedding season

The obstacle has rarely been willingness so much as availability. The board needs a five-star property able to block more than 100 rooms for a couple of nights, with space for the bidding floor itself.

That requirement collides with the Indian wedding season, which runs from October through December and takes large hotels out of circulation for exactly the weeks in which the auction is usually held.

The smaller footprint of a mini-auction is the reason the board believes it can find a venue this time.

A smaller auction before the 2028 reset

The 2027 event is a mini-auction rather than a mega auction. Squads carry over, and teams fill specific gaps around the players they retain instead of rebuilding from an empty list.

It is also the last auction of the present cycle. A mega auction, at which the full pool returns to the table, is due before the 2028 season.

The timing matters for the franchises more than the venue does: releases and retentions have to be settled before the table is set, and those calls are being made now.

Impact Player decision pushed back

The Governing Council discussed the Impact Player rule at the same meeting without reaching a conclusion, and is expected to take it up again at a further meeting about a month later.

Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel are among the players who have argued that the substitution reduces the value of a genuine all-rounder.

"The matter is under discussion. Will take feedback from all the stakeholders and then take a call on this," Dhumal said.

The women's auction is already booked

The Women's Premier League has its arrangements in place. Its 2027 auction is set for 28 October at the Grand Hyatt in Kochi, with the five franchises required to confirm their retentions by 28 September.

The fifth edition of the competition follows from 14 January to 7 February 2027, which puts the women's auction two months ahead of the men's on the same board's calendar.

The BCCI's 95th annual general meeting on 18 September returned Dhumal to the Governing Council and approved plans to mark the IPL's 20th season on a grand scale.

The auction that stocks that season is, for now, the largest piece of it still without a date or an address.
