Amanda-Jade Wellington embraces a new normal after heart procedure

Amanda-Jade Wellington is rediscovering life both on and off the field after undergoing a heart procedure earlier this year — and the Australian leg-spinner has already marked her comeback with a memorable milestone.

Just three months after surgery for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a condition that causes an abnormally fast heartbeat, Wellington claimed her maiden hat-trick in the Vitality Blast while playing for Hampshire Women. The remarkable spell came as part of a five-wicket haul against Essex.

The 29-year-old revealed she had struggled with the condition throughout her life before finally undergoing an ablation procedure in March. Since then, she says she has been adjusting to what feels like an entirely different experience.

“I can actually feel my heart beating normally now,” Wellington said. “It feels strange because that’s never really been normal for me before.”

Wellington admitted the lead-up to surgery was emotionally challenging, especially as it was her first major medical procedure. She credited her partner, teammates and support staff at South Australia women's cricket team for helping her through the difficult period.

Now fully focused on cricket again, Wellington has impressed in England’s domestic season with strong performances in both the One-Day Cup and the T20 Blast. Her hat-trick and five-wicket burst highlighted not only her skill but also her determination after months of recovery and rehabilitation.

Despite no longer being part of Australia’s international plans — having last represented Australia women's national cricket team in 2022 — Wellington remains deeply committed to the game. She says she wants to continue playing for as long as possible while also exploring future opportunities in commentary, media and spin coaching.

Wellington also spoke candidly about missing out in this year’s Hundred draft, acknowledging that not playing international cricket likely affected her chances. Still, she remains optimistic about future opportunities and is determined to continue making an impact around the world.

For Wellington, the comeback has become about much more than wickets and milestones — it is about embracing a healthier life and continuing to enjoy the sport she loves.
